I am pleased to share theTom Doherty Associates Spring 2021 catalogs from Tor Books, Forge, Tor Teen / Starscape, and Tordotcom Publishing with you, as well a few highlights from our upcoming season!
Tor has a season of exciting debuts. Set in a world of goblin wars, stag-sized battle ravens, and assassins who kill with deadly tattoos, renaissance fair performer and comedian Christopher Buehlman’s THE BLACKTONGUE THIEF begins a fantasy adventure unlike any other. From diplomat Shelly Parker-Chan comes SHE WHO BECOMES THE SUN, an epic, queer alternate history which reads like The Song of Achilles meets Mulan. And we have acclaimed novelist, memoirist, and poet Lucinda’s Roy’s first foray into speculative fiction. Set in the aftermath of a cataclysmic second civil war known as The Sequel, THE FREEDOM RACE is already garnering comparisons to the works of Octavia Butler.
At Tordotcom Publishing, Nghi Vho reimagines The Great Gatsby as crossed with The Golem and the Jinni in THE CHOSEN AND THE BEAUTIFUL, a queer coming of age story filled with magic, mystery, and glittery excess. With A PSALM FOR THE WILD-BUILT, Becky Chambers launches her delightful (and hopeful!) new Monk and Robot series. And Nebula, Locus, and Alex Award-winner P. Djèlí Clark returns to his popular alternate Cairo universe for his fantasy novel debut, A MASTER OF DJINN.
Forge is thrilled to welcome Adult Swim host and comedian Joe Pera to the list with his meditative, funny, and fully illustrated A BATHROOM BOOK FOR PEOPLE NOT POOPING OR PEEING BUT USING THE BATHROOM AS AN ESCAPE (I think the title says it all). Speaking of comedy, we are also excited for the paperback edition of last year’s #1 instant New York Times bestseller STAY SEXY AND DON’T GET MURDERED by My Favorite Murder’s Karen Gilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. And if you are looking for smart women’s fiction, please check out Aggie Thompson’s taut, psychological thriller I DON’T FORGIVE YOU and Sarah Adlakha’s SHE WOULDN’T CHANGE A THING, a mind-bending debut about a wife and mother who is given the chance to start over at the risk of losing everything she loves that invokes Sliding Doors and Life After Life.
At Tor Teen, Bethany C. Morrow returns with A CHORUS RISES, a new contemporary fantasy set in the world of her highly acclaimed YA debut A Song Below Water that reads like The Hate U Give meets Shadowshaper. TJ Klune is also back with FLASH FIRE, the sequel to last year’s delightful queer superhero romance, The Extraordinaries. And we are excited to welcome Elayne Audrey Becker, debut author and former Tom Doherty Associates editor, to the list with FORESTBORN, the first in an exciting new fantasy series perfect for readers of Melissa Albert and Emily Duncan.
And of course, no list would be complete without a new book from #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Bruce Cameron! With A DOG’S COURAGE, Cameron once again captures the bravery and determination of a very good dog in the gripping sequel to A Dog’s Way Home, the acclaimed novel that inspired the hit movie.
And that’s just a few of the remarkable titles on our list this season! I hope you will take a look.
